Keep Your Wi-Fi On During Load-Shedding: A Simple UPS Guide

Our network stays on during load-shedding — your router at home just needs power. Here is the cheapest, most reliable way to keep it running.

When the electricity goes, many people think the internet has gone too. With Jhelum Networks fiber, our network has its own backup power. The only thing that switches off is the router in your home. Keep it powered and your internet keeps working — for calls, classes, work and cameras.

How much power does a fiber router use?

Very little — typically 8 to 12 watts, less than a single LED bulb. That is why even a small battery can run it for many hours.

Option 1: DC mini UPS (best for the router)

A small DC UPS sits between the router adapter and the router. When power cuts, it switches over instantly — the router does not even restart. Most models give 4–8 hours for one router.

  • Check the output matches your router adapter — usually 12V (look at the label on the adapter).
  • Check the plug size fits your router.
  • Choose higher mAh/Ah for longer backup.

Option 2: Your home inverter/UPS

If you already have a home UPS for fans and lights, plug the router into it. Note: some inverters take a moment to switch over, and the router may restart — that adds a minute or two of downtime each time. A DC mini UPS avoids this.

Option 3: Solar

For long outages or if you also want to run cameras, a laptop or a fan, a small solar setup recharges the battery during the day. Work out your size here:

Also back up your CCTV recorder — it uses around 15 watts plus the cameras, and keeps recording when the lights go out.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jhelum Networks fiber work during load-shedding?

Yes. Our network has backup power. You only need power for the router in your home.

Why does my router restart when power switches to the inverter?

Some inverters take a fraction of a second to switch. A DC mini UPS connected directly to the router prevents restarts.

Can you recommend a setup for my home?

Yes — send us your details on WhatsApp and our team will suggest a UPS or solar setup that fits.
